PREFACE

In thinking, all Religions also teach us the to do good and avoid doing bad. The doctrine of each Religion is always noble. However, if the preacher does not follow any guideline legitimately, the noble Religion will also become mean. Gradually, the true doctrine will be destroyed.

I had never been a writer. Thus, I should not write book. However, since I think about my onerous responsibility, I have to write this book of “Guideline of Preaching”. I hope that male and female Disciples will preach upon the guideline. By that way, it will be very good for Caodai Religion and it brings the honor to me.

In each preachment, Great Dignitaries should read this book, so that Disciples hear. You also explain the detail for all disciples to understand easily.

I. KEEP THE RELIGIOUS LIFE

This Last Circle is the period of unifying Three Religions in one in order to lead to the natural circulation. The Supreme Being uses the mystery of Taoism to open the Religion via the séances. Therefore, our fate is lucky because we are born at the period of opened Religion. Since the thousands of year happens once and if we are not sincere to have a religious life, it will be come useless for this chance.

Adopting the Caodai is to do good, avoid bad, preserve lucidity, cultivate mind, make merit, save human living beings; not to gather fully to organize faction to victimize other people, to incite to cause disorder. The person adopting the Caodai to chase those errors is the person, who wants to make disorder in the Religion. By that way, he is the traitor against the Religion.

In order to keep a religious life in responsibility, the disciple follows the “New Code” and has to “do good, avoid bad” and “cultivate character”.

1.                        Do good and avoid bad

If a person never does inhumane things but always keeps life sincerely, is he called as person of “doing good, avoiding bad”? No, he is not. That person only avoids bad. It means that he keeps justice human standard (1) [(1) Justice is contained this sentence: “What we do not want, we must not behave to other people”. We never want bad happening to us. Consequently, we should cause bad to other people. Therefore, having no bad things are to keep the justice, but it is not called as doing good], but he has no thing called as good thing.

In order to complete the phrase of “doing good”, he has to save people and human living beings. Prayers of Buddhism teach human to save human living beings, but they do not explain clearly how to do. Correspondingly, many monks do not pay attention accept for a method of tranquil mercy as the basic.

What is the action of saving people? Saving people is to save people facing on difficulty, misfortune. Any people are angry, we help them about food; any people are thirsty, we give them drink; any people are sick, we give them medicine; any people die, we give them casket; any people lose way, we instruct them the way; any people feel sad, we solace them; any people have lawsuit and fights, we seek method of reconciliation; we build bridge to help passenger crossing safely; we giver prayer to other people to know in order return the true way…Those actions are called as saving human living beings. However, we should not be excessive or inadequate. Being inadequate is that we do not help people sincerely to make them become destitute in misfortune as their precious life. Being excessive is that we help people to all situations but we consider if that situation is worthy for us to have help because on the earth, there are many deceitful people who always reply on good people for their life. Helping those people is to help them become lazy, idle. It means that we nourish the bad for them. Moreover, saving the human living beings is up to situation and ability. It depends on richness or poorness to carry our as the above explaining. There are many ways to do. We give alms by if we have them. Otherwise, we can give our merit of labor. If the sincere merits are compared with alms, they are also equal.

2.                        Improve behavior

The monk does not only do good and avoid bad, but also improves behavior. By that way, his dignity may become perfectly good. The behavior is the necessary factor of monk. Becoming the Buddha or Immortal depends on the behavior. Long since, we have never known Buddha or Immortal without behavior. Đức Thái Thượng [太上老君)] advises to make merit while Khổng Thánh [孔夫子] teaches to cultivate oneself. Making merit and cultivating oneself are the basic of Religions. In order to perfect the behavior, beside the Three Moral Bonds and Five Constant Virtues (1) [(1) the doctrine of Three Moral Bonds and Five Constant Virtues was explained by many books. It is unnecessary to explain here], we need to keep modest, patient, steadfast, harmony, upright. That way is called as a stoic (2) [(2) the stoic is the one wining himself, dominating his bad character] in order to obtain the throne of Immortal and Buddha.

Modest

What is the modesty? The modesty is to lower oneself in order to bear others, so that they may be upper. The Supreme Being teaches that: “The character of modesty is a nature I love…You must be modest to save people”.

If a person with scanty ability is modest, the scholar will feel satisfied to guide him. If the scholar is modest, the person of scanty ability respects him. We should know that although how we are learned, there are still superiors than us. Moreover, if we compare our limited knowledge with the deeply immense Way, it is not sufficient for us to feel complacent. Correspondingly, Sages have ever made statement: “The more we learn, the more stupid we feel”. The Sages in past had that thought but nowadays, many people always think they are good that they never wait other people to praise them. That haughty character makes the heart dull, unaware, unthinking event they have body with mind and eye to look at everything. Consequently, they always assert the truth of all things they do and make statement, so that they feel proudly complacent, consider that there is nobody, listen to nobody, agree the advice of nobody, and they do not pardon people who reproach them.

The haughty people is stupid, thus they have no relationship because nobody respects them. Therefore, those people damage nobody, but they just cause derision for other people only. If the haughty people are talent, it is very dangerous because they have enough ability and talent to control feeble people; they are wrong and incite all to follow the error. One person causing error incites a group to make error. They say that: “Thiên Đạo ố dinh nhi ích khiêm”. It means that: “The Natural Law diminishes when it is full. It means to hate haughty people in order to help modest people”. It is too nice for modest character and it is too dangerous for haughty character!

Patience

The patience character is the character of digesting insult. The patient people do not compete or argue with other people, but maintain the moderate attitude. They are not angry with people who sneer or criticize at them.

For issue argued violently by two sides, if this side keeps patient, the issue will become peaceful as two tips of a cord that if one is stretched and one tip is slack, the cord will be never broken. We should know that the patient character is not bad character in order to make everything amicable. Consequently, there is a proverb: “A digesting sentence may be compared with nine amicable sentences”.

The patient character is necessary for everybody. Especially, the people preaching the religious doctrine must need it because they often take many difficulties such as people questioning, attacking. If we are not patient to avoid disagreement, there will be no hope to help them for their religious doctrine.

In ancient time, one disciple of Sakyamuni Buddha applied for preaching. The Buddha asked: “If you preach, they do not only follow you, but vituperate you, what will you do?”

Kindly reply: “If they vituperate me, I believe they are good people because they do not hit me”

Ask: “If they hit you, what will you do?”

Kindly reply: “I also believe they are good because they only hit me, they do not stab me”

Ask: “If they stab you, what will you do?”

Kindly reply: “I also think they are good because they are not contented to kill me”

Ask: “If they kill you, what will you do?”

Kindly reply: “I will consider them as my people of favor because I reply them to avoid suffering, I can be delivered from this impure body”

That is a patient example. We should learn and follow a little bit to preach the doctrine.

   Harmony

There is a sentence: “The advantage geography is not good as mutually harmony people”. Consequently, if there is no harmony in a family, that family cannot reach peaceful situation. The husband blames his wife, his wife is angry with the husband. The family situation is not peaceful to lead to many troubles.

If a kinship knot is not mutually harmony, that kinship certainly has no good concord. They will do not only behave closely together, but also fight together under the blood relationship.

Any society with no harmony becomes shifty, troubled without order and justice. The powerful people block feeble people. The intellectuals victimize dull people. The people become miserable in chaos.

The religion is same to a kinship family, same to a society. Although the religious guideline is very noble and the followers preaching the doctrine have no harmony, that religion certainly falls down. The religion is same to the human’s body and each follower is same to a part of body. All senses, zangs impact and depend mutually. Therefore, followers of a religion impact and depend together. Via that reason, the fellow-worshipers have to love together, behave by heart in harmony. The superior teaches subordinate and subordinate obeys superior. The subordinate advises superior, the superior accepts advice happily. If each minor issue of Religion is considered by combined efforts, there will not be any error and the religious relationship will become closer. By that way, it avoids “the damage of separating the parties”, avoids “fellow-worshippers fights mutually”.

In general, if we are fellow-worshippers, we need not to have previous enmity to communicate together, to combine efforts in order to contribute the word of “harmony” for interests of human living beings. By that way, the God’s Religion will be able to be spread and all living beings will be blessed.

   Consistence

Some people often get ill repute to “obtain no good result from doing everything”. Regarding to all issues, at the beginning time, they are always diligent but in a short period, they become disheartened to leave issues unfinished. That is due to that they do not suffer hardship without the steadfast consistence. It is to the ordinary issues, much less mention about improving ourselves hard. Consequently, the followers must have more consistence than ordinary people that they must pass trials, accept hardships in order to fulfill their responsibility.

We should consider that if we want to be a mandarin, we must learn hard over ten years much less want to obtain the throne of Deity or Immortal. How can we avoid miseries? Correspondingly, there is a proverb: “Practice makes perfect, diligence is the mother of success”.

You should remind this nature together.

Probity

The Saint teaches: “taking the unrighteous property makes us lose the probity”. Consequently, the “probity” does not only hint at mandarin, but also people and followers. What is the probity? It is to keep righteous, not greedy for other people’s property. As a probity mandarin, he governs people justly and uprightly. By that way, the people can avoid suppression of conscienceless people’s money power. It helps the good people not worry the robbery. If we follow a religious life by the probity, our conscience will avoid the stricken status with remorse.

The money of Religion belongs to all disciples but it does not belong to an individual. Therefore, the follower must not spend it on the personal issue.

Whoever takes advantage of religious name to make private interest or reply on power in order to force disciples for money supply or receives much and reports less, will lose the probity. If the probity is faded, all cultivated merits will be lost. The behavior of religious follower needs to be righteous. If money control belongs to us, the incomes and expenditures must be clear. We do not also the common money to spend it on our own free will. If we can keep that character, we will not be ashamed toward the Supreme Being and Deity, Saint, Immortal, Buddha. We also get the confidence in Disciples and we can avoid doubts of good people.

II. HOW DO THE RELIGIOUS FOLLOWERS BEHAVE TOGETHER?

On the earth, people need to have mutual relationship (1) [(1) the mutual communication]. For Disciples, the relationship contains the sincere communication and closely mutual affection. What is the purpose of communication? It is to guide, help, support together in the religious way and earthly life. The brother teaches younger brother, the people comprehending the doctrine teach the people who have not yet comprehended the doctrine thoroughly. We also remind the mistake of other people. The inferior feels pleased to be taught by superior. The superior is not ashamed when the inferior instructs him. We apply the harmony that the superior keeps modest and inferior respects superior happily to share miseries and happiness together in order contribute the Divine Religion to prove that we are children of a same father under one doctrine.

The Supreme Being comes and teaches:

Not to differentiate the name to be in the same roof,
Going with same Religion, it means getting one FATHER.
Keeping the benevolence and righteousness of one hundred years,
 Teaching together one word harmony

In method of communication, we need apply the love (2) [(2) Love is the great passion to love all living beings more than our body], apply all sincerities to have to other people. Our heart will express true sample.

If fellows in Religion do not love and communicate closely together, let every man for himself at his home, let people’s accidents alone in order keep view: “Độc thiện kỳ than” (4) [(4) Just care our good]. Those will be opposite to the Concord Doctrine of Divine Religion.

1.                        Disciple

As a disciple, he must respect the Dignitaries nominated by God because they take the divine special mission to preach the true religion. They have the right to give order to Disciples about good issues in Religion. Although those Dignitaries have scanty ability of young age, the Disciples should not be ashamed to obey responsibility or disciples disdain the Dignitaries. The disdain leads us into the crime which is not to obey the God.

Moreover, the Holily Nominated Dignitaries has a limited power when preaching only. Beside that aspect, all people are religious Fellows as the Disciples.

2.                        Dignitary

Toward the Disciples, it requires the Holily Nominated Dignitaries to have modest conduct, to apply moderate words to teach the inferior, to apply the temperateness together, to give order for each suitable case, not to give an order for unnecessary issues, not to carry out issues over our duty to express arbitrariness. We should not be haughty. Since we have fortune due to our old throne or many merits, we are holily nominated throne. Nobody knows that among Disciples, there are many people who have more talent and conduct than us.

If the Dignitaries and Disciples behave together in temperateness and harmony, the superior Dignitaries are not stable and inferior Dignitaries or Disciples have no disagreement. That is a solemn offering to the Supreme Being.

III. BEHAVE ATHEIST

1.                        For Mandarin and Dignitaries

The Dignitaries are people on behalf of Government to operate the national politics and peace. The civilians must respect the dignitaries. Especially, the religious follows respect them more. What is it? The reason is that for dignitaries, the religious followers get two aspects: Firstly, it is the relation of religious followers toward the superiors. Secondly, t is the relation of civilian toward the mandarin. The religious followers should behave in rites, modesty. If the superior teaches the correct things, the inferior will obey him sincerely. If the superior instructs the falsity, the inferior will deny respectfully. He must not be impolite in disorder. If we can maintain that conduct, the superior loves and our friends praise us. By that way, we help to make the Religion’s name brighter.

The subject toward mandarin also has to keep those modesty and rite. The inferior has to obey what the mandarin teaches because he represents the Government’s power. If they disobey the mandarin, it means that they disobey the Government. We are not able to disobey the Government’s power. However, the power of dignitaries and mandarins is still limited. Although any mandarin oppresses us arbitrarily, we should not oppose immediately because the immediate opposability belongs our minor error, but the falsity or truth will be solved later. There will be complaint at higher mandarin because the Government’s law set up is not only to punish the civilian, but also to the mandarins and dignitaries who do arbitrarily.

2.                        For outsiders from Caodai Religion

Some people, who are not exhaustive about religious doctrine, often think that as a disciple of Caodai religion, they only need to know other Caodai followers. Besides that, they do not need to communicate with other different religious followers. They even do not work or cooperate with them. That thought is very wrong. The Tao depends on the philanthropy. The Caodai guideline is to save the world, which means that we have to save all living beings, to love all human beings, not to love the Caodai’s followers only. Many people have not yet adopted the Caodai because have not yet understood who the God’s Religion guideline is noble and nobody knows that among them there are many good-hearted people with good conduct. Consequently, the falsity occurs when we disdain the outsiders from our Religion. No communication with the outsiders from our Religion is contrary to the Caodai’s guideline.

For inverse people from Caodai

There is no exception for any Religion that at the beginning time, we have to certainly face up many obstacles. When the Sakyamuni Buddha was preaching, the disciples of Brahma [婆羅門, brāhmaṇa] considered as the Heresy because the Sakyamuni Buddha’s doctrine was different from the true doctrine of Buddhism at that period. When the Lao-Tzu was preaching, other considered his method as a charm. When the Jesus was preaching, Israel considered He did against the true Religion such an extent that they arrested and killed Him. Nowadays, how can we avoid many obstacles?

We just let people alone, who do against the Religion, provided that they do behave arbitrarily and do nothing to offend us. Therefore, we should keep moderate in rites. Finally, they will feel ashamed to repent for their error.

Moreover, as a Caodai disciple, we knew the highest guideline of Caodai Religion. The inverse person of religion is a person who understands nothing because of “Lộ bất hành bất đáo” [it means “No step, no reach of destination”. Consequently, since we are a religious follower arguing with other people without knowledge, it does not only bring us any interest but also spends our useless time.

IV. DISSEMINATE THE DIVINE WAY

The Dignitaries nominated holily are persons receiving the heavy duty to disseminate the Divine Way. The outsiders consider our Religions as the True one, it depends on the attitude and action of religious preachers. Consequently, the person preaching the doctrine must always keep our duty. Firstly, we do how to make the God’s Religion bright. Secondly, we make sample for next generation imitating.

The preachers must have enough conduct. By that way, the people respect and admire.

1. Preaching

In every time of preaching, we just follow the true reason to explain. We should not consider our Religion excessively to abuse other Religions. We must not discuss the national affairs, must not contrive deluding things to make people’s heart confused to cause a stir to impact on the national peace, must not apply superstitions to charm people’s heart. When preaching, if someone disparages by elegant style, we also keep moderate attitude to behave. Except for impolite people, we must endure that to keep silent and we should not be angry.

2. Open the worship

When opening the solemn worship for new followers, we must observe the arrangement on Divine altar if it is correct and clean. The ceremonials must be followed the way of Great Way-Third Period-Universal Salvation. The Holily Nominated Dignitaries must not willingly change the ceremonials, must not let the house master spend much money due to our decision, must not receive money of any people although someone wants to donate to the Temple (Whoever wants to donate, should go to the Temple). By that way, we may avoid the doubt and objection. If the Dignitaries preaching keep such righteous attitude, the Disciples do not only admire but the outsiders of Caodai also have no criticism.

Every time of opening the worship, we should not gather over twelve people fully. We can do that except for mandarin’s permission.

V. MUST BE DILIGENT TO ATTEND SERVICE

When adopting the Caodai, disciples should not misunderstand that it is not necessary to go to the Temple to attend the service because there is the God altar at home.

That thought is false. The Temple is the common worship place built for all Disciples to gather at first day and fifteenth day of lunar month (1) [(1) at the Temple, there are two days]. Firstly, we come to hold the service to the Supreme Being and hear the preachment. Secondly, we meet together to discuss the morality in order make the mutual affection close.

The Temple is a location to represent the Supreme Being’s true Religion. Consequently, the human living beings know the way of preaching and religious rites, so that the Religion is easily spreaded. Correspondingly, wherever Disciples go to attend the service fully, the place expresses the prosperity of Religion. If each Disciple thinks that there is the Master at home and stays at home for service, the Temple is deserted. Is that important point concerned to the Religion?

There are disciples misunderstanding that they just attend the service at the Temple where we adopted and they do not attend the service at other Temples necessarily. We must understand that all Temples also adore the same Supreme Being and they are the common Temples of Religion, not up to someone. Therefore, we must not have differentiation concept. For example, our area had not got Temple yet and we had to adopted the Caodai at other Temple, but one new Temple is built at our area, we should attend the service at the Temple in our area to be convenient for us. Firstly, we do not need to go far for service. Secondly, we avoid travelling expense.

For far Temples, if we have chance to go there, we should go there. Firstly, we kowtow to the Supreme Being. Secondly, we may know Disciples there.

In general, when adopting the Religion, we must be diligent to go to Temple for service axcept for family issues.

VI. LAWS OF OFFERING SERVICE

The offertory to the God and Divine Beings is up to the respectful sincerity. When offering the service, all male, female Disciples must be pure and grave.

         Consequently:

Before attending the service, we make us pure to pray the God and Divine Beings deferentially. In the service, we must keep grave.

Before the service begins, we must not joke, make speech or expectorate in the service.

Even the service’s preparation is done or not, males and females must separate into two sides. From the altar to look out, the male disciples are on the left and the female disciples are on the right without disorder. All followers must not talk or indulge in familiarities, must not whisper in somebody’s ears, must not report earthly issues, must not discuss national affairs, must not make deluding hearsay, must not remind injustice for mutual argument, must not compete in trouble, must not talk about absent disciples, must not beat about bush for mutual nitpicking, must not use the funny words to sneer together, must not take other prayer-books approved by the Sacerdotal Council.

         Attending the service

When attending the service, disciples must wear black turban. The Supreme Being’s disciples must follow the Divine will. Each disciple fulfills his duty to avoid disrespect to the Supreme Being and Deity, Saint, Immortal, Buddha.

After service’s preparation, two sides must separate to hold service silently and must keep mind absolutely.

Whoever wears western clothes, must keep decent due to western style. When attending the service, they must keep barefoot, must not smoke or chew betel.

Whoever drank wine, should not attend the service. The service attendance requires us to our purity of body and respectful heart. Each disciple knows his purity or no purity more than other disciples know him. Whoever goes to the temple without purity, should not attend the service because it is afraid he causes crimes in front of the Divine Beings.

Before holding the service to the Supreme Being, normally there are preachments, all disciples must keep silent to listen. Whoever has unclear things or wants to ask, must wait the preacher finish the preachment, must not quarrel amid the preachment. For question, whoever wants to ask something, may ask the preacher and other disciples must not interfere and argue together. If there is someone who wants to discuss or re-ask something, he must ask the preacher’s permission. It is impossible that disciples argue while one disciple is speaking. That way is so impolite.

After the service, there is preachment. The Disciples staying at the back of temple also keep silent and they must not make troublesome, must not make confusion and cause noise by wooden shoes.

VII. MUST READ PRAYER-BOOKS, FOLLOW RELIGIOUS LAW

The prayer-books and law of Religion are same to the lamp to light for follower.

The unlearned people should read prayer-books. Firstly, it helps to wide the knowledge. Secondly, we understand the religious doctrine thoroughly. The Religious Law is the rule, so that the follower follows to preach in standard in order to avoid the break toward prohibition. Many disciples adopting the Caodaism do not follow prayer-books to observe law. They just think that four times of offering present daily are enough and they complain that nobody teaches the esoteric things in Caodai. That complaint is very false because number of disciple is innumerable. It is impossible to teach each disciple. The prayer-books and true doctrine are ready but we do not seek to study.

That is for unlearned disciples. For intellectuals, although we are talent with widen knowledge, we are the beginners of Religion, we do not certainly understand the doctrine thoroughly. If we are proficient in doctrine, we should also read prayer-books that we have not ever red them because those books also help us know more doctrine. Moreover, even we are talent, we are not able to know the religious guideline and law thoroughly because we are the beginners. For example, if an intelligent talent going to a strange country wants to know roads there, he needs to ask the native people. He cannot think he is erudite not to ask the unlearned people. For the religious issue, we are erudite about other field but we are a beginner in the Religious, therefore we need to learn from the religious erudite disciples who have adopted the Caodai before us. We can also learn from prayer-books. When we comprehend the doctrine thoroughly, we study more from our knowledge and we may become better that the person who has ever guided us. After that, we can write many books which are more valuable than the books that we have ever red in Religion.

VIII. WHAT IS THE WAY OF READING PRAYER-BOOKS?

The prayer-books are written by knowledgeable people, however they are earthly people (1) [(1) do not think that all ancient prayer-books were written by Immortals, Saints. Even it is true, when writing those prayer-books, they were earthly people. Indispensably, the prayer-books got errors] like us. Therefore, they also contain mistakes. Moreover, the prayer-books made depend on period. Many ancient prayer-books were suitable for past period, but they are not for nowadays period.

Correspondingly, in order to read what prayer-books for usefulness, we need to study what we need to keep in mind, to have no need to hurriedly believe what is unclearly. We just believe what is suitable to period and ignore what is contrary to our guideline. We should not believe prayer-books excessively, should not think that all prayer-books were written by Saints, and then we follow all teachings. That method of reading prayer-books is very dangerous. The prayer-books contain things we have to believe, but there are things we should not believe them. If we believe all things, it will lead us to the mistaken way. If there is no discrimination for truth or falsity and there is no broaden knowledge when reading prayer-books, it is useless for our work and we also become the slave of prayer-books. In that case, the better way is that we should not read prayer-books. It says that: “If we believe all prayer-books, it would be better not to read prayer-books”.

Long since, many people believe ancient prayer-books by word by word, by sentence by sentence; they get falsity in belief for improving their religious life hard. Alas! It does not only bring the good effect but also damages their spirit. Actually, it is necessary if reading prayer-books helps us about understand doctrine and Tao. If we depend on them to have spiritual exercise, it will be so dangerous, because when having a minor mistake in understanding, it also damages our body.

In order to have effect of spiritual exercises, we have to make merits firstly fully. When our merits are enough, an esoteric sentence of our Master-The Supreme Being also makes us understand the truth. Moreover, the God has ever taught: “The prayer-books, which help us be supernatural, are same to chopsticks for meal. Without chopsticks, people can still scoop up with their hands”. The Supreme Being means that: “Prayer-books are same chopsticks and spiritual exercises are same to having meal. The person who has enough merits, ethics and knowledge at prayer-books, do spiritual exercises easily. It is same to the person having meals with chopsticks in hands. The person, who has enough merits and ethics without enough knowledge at prayer-books, has a little bit of difficulty in doing spiritual exercises only, but he can reach success as the person has a meal without chopsticks in hands”.

I.- GIỮ ĐẠO

Thuở nay nhiều người quá tin nơi kinh sách điển xưa, cứ nhắm mắt tin theo từng chữ, nghe từng câu, rồi hiểu sái, tin lầm, khổ tâm luyện Đạo. Than ôi!
